Chemical and toxicological charactererisation of recycled plastics

Plastic contains a long list of additives and a few hundred of these are suspected or found to be dangerous to humans or the environment. There is therefore a significant risk that hazardous chemicals may also be present in recycled plastic. In this project we want to map the chemical load in the plastic streams that Svensk Plast Recycling recycles. The project will increase knowledge about which hazardous substances are found in recycled plastic, where these substances come from and risks to people and the environment from chemicals in recycled plastic. We will develop and disseminate knowledge about modern measurement methods for hazardous substances in recycled plastics and develop web-based solutions with information on hazardous substances in recycled plastics to help improve companies and authorities' ability to reduce or eliminate the flow of hazardous chemicals in recycled plastics.
