Next Generation Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Buildings Made of Agricultural Waste

The project aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of using agricultural waste straw (otherwise burned) as a primary building material to construct building components for prefabricated medium-sized residential and commercial structures. Our concept will integrate panels made of compressed straw into Structural Insulated Panels (SIP) for applications in walls, floors, and roofs. Along with clear environmental benefits such as reducing field straw burning, decreasing emissions in the supply chain related to transportation, reducing the use of steel and cement, minimizing raw material extraction, and deforestation, the project focuses on resource efficiency by reintroducing a significant waste stream into the building sector's life cycle. Furthermore, the project contributes to a socially sustainable supply of affordable housing by utilizing low-cost raw materials and off-site production with significantly low emissions associated with the deconstruction and destruction phase.
